Throwback Thursday: Cast Away movie review

Sitting on the couch one Thursday evening, I suddenly felt the urge to grab an old movie from my collection and I picked this – “Cast Away” a survival film directed by Robert Zemeckis, starring two great Hollywood celebrities Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt.

I think I can pleasantly report that the movie still holds up, even after 14 years since it was first released.

The story is set in 1995 where Chuck Noland, a strictly time-conscious Fed-Ex shipping representative who often travels the world to fix problems for the company. He leaves home for Christmas but encounters a plane crash that eventually left him stranded on an uninhabited island.

He was forced to adapt to his new situation, using little or no survival skills and with the help of several FedEx packages he managed to gather from the shores. The entire film mainly focuses on Chuck and so you’ll see him trying out different things simply to stay alive. After all these years, these scenes still manage to make me laugh, cry, and feel pity for the character.

I also find it touching that Chuck looks to the picture of Kelly Frears (Helen Hunt) as his inspiration to endure all the difficulties. But perhaps no other scene in the movie is as heart-wrenching as that final scene with Wilson the volleyball.

I really love this film and I consider it among my most favorite. I’ll recommend it anytime to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

5 Lessons I Learned From Moving

A little confession here – I do not enjoy moving.

Friends of mine who get to read this blog post might be surprised with this because they know I have moved several times throughout the course of my life here in Australia.

When I was young, my parents decided to move from one state to another after my father got promoted on his job and had to be reassigned. After my dad’s retirement, we also had to move to a different location to establish a small family business. Of course, I also had to leave when I attended college. My employment and marriage, shortly after finishing school, became further reasons for me not to settle in the same place.

And I suspect things do not end there yet. There may be yet other valid reasons why I and my family will probably move somewhere else in the near future.

Perhaps I simply dislike the hassle of being taken out of my comfort zone. Or who am I kidding? I think it’s the trouble of packing belongings I loathe the most. Organizing everything can take a lot of time and work – not to mention expensive since hiring a vehicle is often necessary.

Anyway, I’ll try to share with you some of the things I’ve learned from my experiences and I hope these simple packing tips can help you minimize common errors and challenges that most first-time movers encounter often. Take note that some of these lessons I have learned through the hard way so try to pay attention to what I say if you want to prevent the same problems.

1. Use the right boxes.

First and foremost, I feel I have to emphasize the importance of using the right boxes for specific items. For example, it is ideal to use small boxes for books and other heavy objects while large boxes are recommended for lighter items. Inexperienced packers often do it the other way and that can be a terrible mistake. This can make carrying the boxes a lot more difficult than usual.

2. Fill in the gaps.

Of course, it is also important that you leave no empty spaces inside the boxes. In case there are gaps, try putting some of your blankets, towels, socks, or tissue paper in between. This can minimize damages your belongings may get while in transit.

3. Organize everything before sealing the box.

Aside from choosing an appropriate box and inserting proper cushioning, it is also advisable that you arrange the items before taping the box. Avoid mixing unrelated objects because that will make unpacking harder later on.

4. Label all the boxes.

This is another practical tactic that can make unpacking much easier as you arrive on your new home. You’ll know which boxes need to be taken to which rooms.

5. Ship items to your new address.

Whether you will be using your own vehicle or will be renting one, it may sometimes be difficult to fit all your boxes in if you have too many. Instead of getting another vehicle, I would encourage you to ship your belongings to the new address instead. This is significantly cheaper and so this is highly recommended. I personally prefer DHL courier Australia for these services but feel free to check out other options in your area if this is unavailable.

Again, these are merely based on my experiences and I’m sure there are many other strategies to make moving less stressful for anyone. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to hit the comment section and I’ll do my best to respond quickly. Also, I won’t mind receiving further advice regarding moving. It’s not like I’m already an expert on the subject anyway!

The Basics of Comic Book Shipping

A friend of mine recently approached me asking for ideas regarding comic book shipping. This guy is hoping to venture into the business of online retailing and considers me as an expert in the subject of sending packages. Fortunately for him, I was once a comic book collector myself when I was younger and so I readily shared some thoughts with him.

I’ve been trying to learn Sparkol Video Scribe lately and I thought it would be fun to create a video about this topic.

So here goes a short clip. If you’re planning to get started in this type of business, do pay attention here!

Will Your Long-distance Relationship Pan Out?

I hate being away from home. For someone who has had a wonderful experience growing up, it can be truly a heart-wrenching decision to leave family and friends. This is a reality that happens every day though, especially when great things await you on the other side of the world. Sometimes you simply need to leave, even if you and they wish you don’t have to.

What a sad and depressing scenario for people who love each other.

Long-distance relationships carry that dreaded stigma of “possibly not working out” and for all the good (but sad) reasons. Many couples say they need each other’s presence for the feelings to linger, which is why some simply hate the idea of their partners not having enough time for them. Your strong presence matters in your relationship, which is why leaving your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife or husband – because your work or other plans need you to be somewhere far – is often frowned upon.

A few good things do come from being away from your loved one, if you were to be convinced by a recent study conducted by the Department of Psychology at the Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Results of the research went on to say that the distance might just make two couples work harder to maintain their closeness – an important relationship ingredient many who live together or close to each other tend to forget, not appreciate or take for granted.

Thankfully, innovations in technology are effectively keeping mankind constantly in contact and seeing each other any time they like. Think Skype, Facetime, Google Hangouts and many more innovative platforms that allow you to actually see and talk to your significant other, regardless of how far they are from you. If modern technology is too overwhelming for you, go for the old school approach: mail a love letter or a care package.

With so many options for you to stay connected and be close to world to the one you love, it may be too hasty to jump into concluding that your long-distance relationship will not work. Just as couples near or living with each other can neither guarantee a lifelong commitment nor assure a happy ever after.

The research strongly highlights that you can make your relationship work, but it largely depends on what you do about it.

Perhaps that applies to just about everything.

Love in a Package

Image

When I was young, I was struck with a severe case of fever that landed me in the hospital for two weeks.

It was Christmas season, and I felt so weak and sad because I will be missing our usual caroling activities with my siblings and cousins. As children, we used to visit the homes of close relatives to sing Christmas carols for them. In return, they gave us presents: cash, clothes, toys, socks, or food. Christmas was my most thrilling experience back then.

My mind was still wandering into the not-so-distant past when I heard a knock on the door. My weak little heart jumped for joy when I saw what I thought was Santa, and as he entered, he began to sing my favorite Christmas carol, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” I was so overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation that my dear Santa had something for me.

True enough, when he finished singing, he went out of the room and after what seemed three seconds, he came back with a box and he presented it to me. I was still weak from days of not eating enough and vomiting each time I took something into my stomach. But I think my face lighted up when my mom opened the big box. It was a mini bike that I had been bugging her about each time she took me to the mall.

It was one of the most memorable events of my life. I later learned that the Santa I met at the hospital was a delivery man from a same day delivery company. And the gift I received was love in a package from my loving mother who thought would lose me. So she gave me what I had wanted – to inspire me to struggle to get well.

A Way to Say I’m Sorry

It’s been three weeks since my wife left home. She had moved in to her sister’s house when she found a text message on my mobile phone that said “Can you make it out with me tonight at 8?”

The message might have broken her heart to pieces because it was our wedding anniversary. Without saying a word, she packed a few of her personal belongings and left. Deep in my heart, I really wanted to explain but I knew then that she wouldn’t listen. Honestly, we had been in that situation before, but this time, I’m innocent. The text message was a prank from one of my friends who wasn’t sensitive enough to discern the consequence of his actions.

I love my wife so much and I can’t imagine life without her for so long. After three weeks, I thought that my wife would have cooled down a bit and maybe she would listen to me. So I decided to make a move. I bought a stationery paper from a bookstore, told her the real story and promised to take her to my friend who owned the cell phone so she would believe that I was not lying. I sent the note through a same day courier service and called her up the following day to say how sorry I am.

I was very happy that day because my wife answered my call although she still seemed hurt and suspicious. But because she knew me well, she gave in and apologized for being too abrupt with her decisions. I fetched her from her sister’s house, met her with a bunch of red roses and took her to a restaurant. My heart was celebrating the great reunion. I had never felt so in love with my wife than this. I promised not to break her fragile heart anymore. We went out of the restaurant and headed straight to my friend to patch things up once and for all.

A Day in the Life of a Brother

It had been such a busy week and I nearly forgot my little sister’s birthday. Well, I call her that but she isn’t so little anymore. Way too far from it, in fact. She’s living some 8,000 miles away (for work) but that would be a very lame excuse for not remembering such a special day.

Looking back, I was almost sure she wouldn’t mind that the brother she put up with and loved so much (and still does I hope) would forget what no real family would. But knowing how alike we are in so many ways, I knew she would mind.

I often bother her with a Facebook message, but I’ve not seen her a long time now, so I wondered if she had outgrown some of the things I knew she loved the most. She’s all grown up and on her own now, and soon she’ll be settling down (or I may be getting ahead of her plans) – which means she would appreciate no stuff toy, but would love a great item she would always have with her and remember me by.

Finding her a gift was not exactly a walk in the park, I tell you that. When I tried to figure out what matters to us as family, I finally got an idea. She loved watches, and I know a beautiful timepiece would remind her and me that no distance or time can keep us apart. Of course, I didn’t have to tell her that. She knew what it would mean.

Long story short, I managed not to mess up and had to find a great gift for my best-buddy-and-sister in one. I had the item carefully packed and sent to her.

A day later, she suddenly came to mind. She must have had the gift in her hands, I thought, because I remembered her in the middle of a difficult day at work. My phone rang just a solid 30 seconds after that, and when I heard the happy, familiar voice of a lady on the other end of the line, I knew I picked the right birthday present.

Missing Home? Close the Distance through Phone Calls and Packages

Stepping away from your comfort zone gives you a sense of independence. Living out of your country, for one, introduces you to that freedom you’ve never known you could enjoy and the challenges you never thought you’d overcome. If you are one of the 232 million people around the world who live in places other than their own for educational, economical or other purposes, you’ll know that while this experience can be so liberating, it can be equally lonely, especially if this means being miles away from the people you hold dear.

Don’t let the distance daunt you. It is to your great advantage that we are now living in a world where (almost) everything seems to be easy, within reach and convenient. Yes, there are many innovations and modern discoveries that make everything possible. These days, you can live in one side of the globe without worrying about getting connected to someone you love from the opposite end.

Think of the Internet and its vast range of capabilities. Taking advantage of it all and embrace it. You can chat, email and see your family, friends or significant other via video calls or chats. The power of going online lets you keep in touch with them anytime and at all times, and you only need an Internet-powered device to make this possible.

While the most modern technologies mainly keep you from being too lonely without your loved ones beside you, good old phone calls are still indispensable. It’s easier with handheld mobile phones these days, but everybody sticks to the basics of beating loneliness – giving that person a call. There are significant changes to the way a phone call can be made, as well. Phone companies now offer lower call rates in various packages so you can get in touch with people who matter to you without breaking the bank.

You dare not forget special occasions your family and closest friends celebrate, much less take for granted that momentous event you share with your significant other. Make the celebration anywhere in the world extra special by sending food to America for that grand reunion, gifts for your best friend’s birthday party in Moscow, a personalized present for your partner in Paris, and victory parties of your favorite cousin in Hong Kong. Sending these people your thoughts through calls or chat is wonderful, but nothing beats a pleasant surprise they can actually get their hands on.

Make sure your presence is felt by the people close to your heart. No amount of distance or time should hinder you from letting these individuals know you think and care about them, no matter where in the world you or they are.
